A major step forward in securing clean drinking water for Tarawa is underway, as the China-aid seawater desalination project enters its final phase.
Once completed, the facility will produce 250 tons of safe, potable water every day—addressing a long-standing need for reliable water access in the region.
Currently, engineers are focused on installing and debugging equipment at the site. The project is designed to harness seawater, convert it into fresh drinking water, and significantly ease pressure on the island’s limited water resources.
The desalination plant is part of broader cooperative efforts between Kiribati and China, aiming to strengthen infrastructure and improve public health through sustainable development.
Locals say the promise of clean water is a welcome change, with many looking forward to better quality of life once the plant goes live.
