Chinese Fishing Company Apologizes After Kiribati Crewman Assaulted at Sea

A Chinese fishing company has issued a formal apology following a violent incident in which a Kiribati national was assaulted by his fellow Chinese crew members working aboard one of its vessels.


The apology was delivered on May 13 during a visit to the crew member and his family, organised with the support of the TUC Elderly Association.

He also pledged that the company will take immediate steps to improve oversight and ensure the safety and well-being of all crew members.


The Kiribati crew member and his family accepted the apology and appreciated the company’s commitment to change.


The Chargé d’Affaires from the Chinese Embassy in Kiribati also joined the visit, offering words of comfort and stressing the importance of maintaining strong relations between the Chinese and Kiribati people.


The company has promised stricter management measures and a safer working environment going forward.
