More than 120 residents from the Nanikaai community took part in a public health screening and consultation for diabetes and high blood pressure yesterday.

A one-day event was led by Teera Katarake, Health Director of the Kiribati Mission, with support from 10,000 Toes Ambassadors and the Bairiki Seventh-day Adventist Church.

According to Mission President Pastor Taabua Rokeatau, the turnout—featuring people from various religious and social backgrounds—shows that “the health message and healing transcend religious boundaries.”

The program combined health checks with uplifting music and food package distributions by children from the Bairiki SDA Church, highlighting the church’s “total member involvement” approach to community care.

Organizers say this initiative is part of an ongoing effort to promote preventive health across Kiribati.

Climate change remains an urgent threat to Pacific Island nations, with new warnings and action plans emerging.

NASA reports that countries like Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Fiji will face at least 15 centimeters of sea-level rise within the next 30 years—regardless of future emissions. This means places like Kiribati could see up to 65 days of coastal flooding each year by the 2050s.

In response, adaptation efforts are ramping up. During a recent visit to Tuvalu, World Bank President Ajay Banga stressed the importance of preparing Pacific youth to meet these challenges.

He emphasized building not only physical infrastructure, but also investing in education and healthcare to equip young people for climate resilience and job opportunities—especially as migration becomes a growing reality.

These developments highlight both the growing risks and the urgent need for global and local action in the face of climate change.
