Kiribati welcomed a group of international diplomats this week, as representatives from the European Union, France, Switzerland, and Malaysia visited the country to strengthen ties and explore areas of cooperation.


Australian High Commissioner André van der Walt joined the Government of Kiribati in receiving the visiting dignitaries and described the engagement as a positive step toward achieving “meaningful outcomes for the people of Kiribati.”


The visit reflects a growing commitment among diplomatic partners to work collaboratively on shared challenges, including climate change, development, and regional stability.


High Commissioner van der Walt emphasized the value of continued collaboration within the diplomatic corps, noting that stronger partnerships are essential for long-term progress in the Pacific.


The joint visit underscores Kiribati’s expanding role in international diplomacy and signals deeper engagement with global allies moving forward.

Their visit began in Minzhu Village—a model community in Chongqing known for its emphasis on social harmony and intergenerational living.


KHM and other media delegates had the chance to see how local residents live, work, and connect in a setting designed to reflect modern Chinese values.

From there, the group traveled to the Hongyan Revolutionary Museum, where they explored one of China’s key resistance sites during the Second World War, once home to Mao Zedong’s military operations.


The journey then leapt forward into the future at the SERES Super Factory, a state-of-the-art facility producing intelligent electric vehicles using automated robotic assembly lines.


To close the day, delegates shared a traditional hotpot meal in an unusual setting—an underground restaurant carved into a former 400-kilometer bomb shelter, offering a unique fusion of culture, history, and innovation."

The day’s program centered on an Economic and Trade Promotion event where Chinese experts outlined advancements in high-tech industries and strategies aimed at building a more sustainable economy.


Delegates also toured the Zengjiayan Metro Station and boarded Chongqing’s straddle monorail—an elevated transport system that reflects China’s push toward futuristic, eco-friendly urban planning.


The monorail offered panoramic views of the city's mountainous terrain and river systems, symbolizing how infrastructure is being used to connect communities and elevate urban living standards.
