Kiritimati Island Fisheries Project To Provide Key Economic Boost

Ambo, Tarawa, 5 March, 2025

ree

The Kiritimati Island Fisheries Limited project, a joint venture between the Government of Kiribati and China, is taking shape with a colorful floating structure that now encompasses the western lagoon side of the facility.

This vibrant floating structure, which lies adjacent to the Kiribati House of Assembly (Te Maneaba ni Maungatabu), marks a significant step in the project’s development.

Currently in its investment phase, the project is focused on farming milkfish and red snapper, with the goal of boosting local fish production and contributing to the country's economy.

Over 100 local workers are employed in this growing venture, working diligently from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

KIFL Manager Lianghua Zhu says their main fish providers include the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development (MFMRD) and local fishermen from North Tarawa.

Fishing floats used in the project are sourced from China, with the colorful structure serving as a focal point for the growing operations.

The project faces challenges in meeting the demand for milkfish, primarily due to a shortage of breeding grounds. Currently, the project has three breeding places to raise milk fish. They have one fish pond at Ambo and two others at Taborio and the third one close to the islet known as te Abanuea.

At present, the project sells an average of 70 kilograms of fish per day, Monday through Saturday, at a price of $8 per kilogram.

Despite the ongoing limitations, the initiative is steadily progressing. As production scales up, the project is expected to see strong annual sales and a positive economic impact on the country as a whole.

While still in its early stages, the Kiritimati Island Fisheries project holds great promise for local employment, sustainable food production, and long-term economic growth for the community. The hardworking team behind the project remains committed to turning this promising venture into a successful and sustainable operation for the future.

Health Rejuvenation Program Concludes Successfully at Kiribati Mission Community

March 5, 2025 – Korobu, Tarawa

The Health Rejuvenation Program at the Kiribati Mission community in Korobu has reached its final day today, marking the end of a transformative three-day journey for participants. Many individuals have already reported noticeable improvements in their health, particularly in their screening results, as the program nears completion.

One of the participants, Mr. Vai Tafusi, shared his experience with the program. He admitted that the first two days were challenging as his body adjusted to the new diet and routine.

However, on the third and final day, he reported feeling much better and more energized. "It was tough at first," Mr. Tafusi said, "but now, I can already feel the difference. I have more energy and feel healthier overall. And I have dropped my sugar level from my normal 19 to just 12 this third day of the program."

The program, which focused on detoxification, healthy eating, and wellness practices, has had a positive impact on the community, and participants are hopeful that the benefits will extend beyond the three-day period. Many are eager to continue adopting the healthy habits learned during the program into their daily lives.

As the final day wraps up, participants leave with renewed hope for better health and a greater understanding of how to take charge of their well-being.

A traditional styled celebration and farewell feast will be held this evening before George Kwong flies back to Fiji tomorrow.
