Kiribati celebrated its first-ever Police National Day last Friday, June 23, with a grand parade and formal ceremony at the Kiribati Police Headquarters in Betio, South Tarawa—now officially a national public holiday.

The event paid tribute to the dedicated service of the Kiribati Police Service (KPS) and honored officers who have died in the line of duty, drawing guests including President Taneti Maamau, First Lady Teiraeng Maamau, and regional dignitaries.

In a show of Pacific unity, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) stood proudly alongside KPS officers, having worked closely with them to develop ceremonial protocols, including parade drills, catafalque party formation, and funeral procedures.

The AFP also helped produce a new drill manual to support the ongoing development of KPS ceremonial skills.

With over 120,000 people spread across 33 islands, Kiribati now formally recognizes the KPS’s vital role in national peace and order.

The Kiribati Charity Foundation (KCF) has received a generous donation of a new pickup truck from the Government and people of China, strengthening its work to support children and families in South Tarawa’s most vulnerable communities.

Speaking at a special handover event, a representative of the Foundation expressed heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Zhou Limin for China’s continued support.

The donation follows previous in-kind gifts, including office equipment, which have been vital to KCF’s daily operations.

Founded in 2018 under the leadership of First Lady Madame Teiraeng Maamau, KCF was built largely by volunteers and is the first of its kind in Kiribati—focused on tackling poverty and youth challenges in areas like Betio, Teaoraereke, and Bikenibeu.

The Foundation praised the vehicle donation as a “gift that touches the hearts of children and youth,” and closed with a blessing for the Ambassador: Te Mauri (health), Te Raoi (peace), and Te Tabomoa (prosperity)
