UNICEF and the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create child-focused insurance solutions that protect Pacific children during climate emergencies.
The partnership aims to build resilience in the region—one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable—by focusing first on the education sector.
The goal is to ensure schools and early childhood centres can better withstand and recover from disasters.
UNICEF Pacific Representative Jonathan Veitch said the move ensures children are not left behind in times of crisis, while PCRIC CEO Aholotu Palu described the effort as "building a safety net of resilience under the feet of our children."
The initiative includes close collaboration with communities and national systems to ensure quick deployment of insurance payouts, and will expand to include health, nutrition, WASH, and child protection services in future stages.
This marks a significant step forward in safeguarding the rights and futures of children across the Pacific.
